1. Because I know I’ll get flak for not addressing it: Atheism is not a religion. It is a lack of belief in any proposed deity or religion. A religion, by definition, stands on belief, ceremony, and worship. Atheists as a whole have none of these set as a standard.

2. “Militant” implies that there’s militaristic tendencies, which further implies a military-type action which would involve weapons and organized violence. This is simply not the case. No atheist has ever picked up a gun and killed in the name of a not-god. (There are atheists who have killed people, but never in the name of a not-god, just so we’re clear.)

Now, on to the actual content of your post. Your main argument is that atheists want to tear down monuments of fallen soldiers. That is not true. What we do want done, is to have the government recognize that not all fallen soldiers were not necessarily Christian, and therefore are being disrespected by being buried under a decidedly Christian memorial. We also want a clear delineation between church and state, such as having the Ten Commandments removed from public courthouses, and making sure that the government either caters to all religions equally, or to none at all.

I don’t think any rational person will complain about the Star of David in the Israeli flag, because that’s their country, and it was founded on a decidedly theological basis. Conversely, the United States was founded as a secular country that allows free religious worship, and therefore, many of us are trying to prevent the encroachment of Christian ethics and dogma into our government and public schools.

Finally, you accuse us of hypocrisy, in that we are trying to shove our “ideologies” down other people’s throats (atheists don’t have a set ideology, except for a lack of belief in a god) and complain when others do the same. I’m sure at some point in your life, you were interrupted by the doorbell on a Saturday morning to be greeted by some proselytizers who actively want to psychologically and emotionally beat you down and then use scare tactics (disguised as love) to get you to join their religion. To me, that is the most intrusive, inconsiderate way to try and get someone to change their mindset and their belief system.

I know this might REALLY surprise you but I KNOW my religion is illogical. That is the definition of faith, commitment in the face of no fool-proof evidence. This is probably going to just fucking shock you but if I wanted to stop believing in God I WOULD. So please stop shoving your fucking lack of religion down my throat. In my years on this planet I’ve had maybe 10 Christians try to convert me. I’ve had 100s of instances with atheists trying to convince me there is no God. Please tell me more about how Christians are so annoying.
